Title: Computer-based technologies and their impact on manufacturing flexibility

Abstract: This paper is based on an empirical study of one hundred and sixty five business units in three US industry groups. The industry groups are industrial machinery equipment, electronic and electric machinery equipment, and transportation equipment. The two-digit Industrial Classification Codes (SIC) for these industries are 35, 36, and 37 respectively. The three industry groups are characterized as technology-intensive industries. The main goal of this paper is three-fold. Firstly, a conceptual model that relates computer-based technologies, hereafter CBTs to manufacturing flexibility was introduced. Secondly, a technology assessment equation was developed. Finally, the relationships stated in our conceptual model are tested empirically.
