Abstract: In this paper, empirical analysis is performed between information activities and energy use in the Chinese economy, based on an Input–Output (I–O) approach. The results show that: (1) information activities were very active and important in the Chinese economy from 1987 to 1997; (2) the importance of energy use and information activities changed greatly in this period and information activities truly substituted for energy and contributed to energy saving and (3) the process of disseminating information appears incomplete and it will have a potential impact on the Chinese economy to reduce energy intensity.
