Adoption of service-oriented architecture by information systems

Abstract: Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is widely accepted as a new paradigm for delivering useful functionality in a cost effective way. It forms a new trend to be adopted by organisations in mitigating legacy system problems as in to maximise interoperability, reusability, flexibility and cost efficiency. Legacy (management) information systems (IS), used in most of the organisations, are in preparation to adopt and accelerate adoption of SOA. However, the success does not depend on whether SOA is adopted, but rather, how it is adopted. Adoption approaches vary and will determine the resulting value of SOA to the enterprise/organisation. This article aims to research on how an organisation should apply a service-oriented design to systems that were previously standalone heterogeneous applications and in what way the SOA should be adopted.
