Abstract: DF2 tool steel is extensively used in tool and mould making industries. A great number of mechanical mould parts may involve relative sliding. Techniques to improve the tribological behaviours of DF2 components are being sought. Texturing of DF2 tool steel with staggered (ST) and in-lined (IN) patterns using pulsed Nd:YAG laser and tribological behaviours under wet lubrication condition were studied. Pin-on-plate tests under different sliding speeds showed superior tribological behaviours when compared with non-patterned (NP) counterparts. Some underlying mechanisms involved are also reported in this paper.
