Abstract: This study focuses on the perspective of middle to top management on the role of business intelligence, specifically on the technical capabilities of BI within medium to large companies in South Africa. The study explored usage of business intelligence systems (BIS) together with corporate performance. A quantitative approach was applied using online questionnaires targeted at employees of medium and large South African organisations. The surveys questioned middle to top management on issues surrounding BIS and corporate performance. The study found that apart from obtaining and implementing a successful BI solution, the need for an organisation to support users of BI systems by providing the applicable skills and training is of paramount importance to the success of the systems implemented. The research also indicated that organisations need to constantly equip users with technical knowledge and support to give them a high level of competency in using and navigating the BI systems.
