Abstract: This paper describes the experience gained in teaching graduate-level engineering courses using a fully-interactive fibre-optic video network that was created to interconnect Lehigh University to classrooms in four different locations of the AT&T Bell Laboratories in Pennsylvania. Using two-way video and audio techniques, students and teacher can both see and hear each other, thus creating an environment for the remote student close to that of being in the real classroom. The design aspects and configuration of the network, as well as of a typical classroom, are described. From the experience and the results of a survey of instructors and student bodies, direction for improvements are indicated, and some directions for future activities for this type of network are presented.
