Universities of the future

Abstract: In an address to the Industrial Research Institute, the President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute outlines some of the failings of the present US higher education system for scientists and engineers. He expresses the view that attention needs to be directed to the quality and quantity of science and technology education, to the priorities of technological education, and to effective political lobbying for the improved funding of higher education. He envisages that 'universities of the future' will need to place greater emphasis on teaching than at present, and to develop a skilled approach to political influence.
