Continuing professional development of engineers: from theory to practice in a public limited company

Abstract: As a newly privatised company, National Grid Company plc needed to establish a framework for training its predominantly engineering workforce to operate effectively in a competitive commercial environment. The framework would reflect the considerable advice and guidance offered during the past decade on the education and training of engineers. All categories of engineer would have access to the system, which should be characterised by through-life training provision and facility for upward progression between categories. This paper describes the translation of accepted good practice into the reality of implementation. It recounts the systematic development of an integrated framework for the continuing education and training of engineers firmly based on the needs of the new company.
