Abstract: Distributed design is an ever-increasing practice not realising its full potential. This paper argues for a new approach to supporting distributed design, complimenting existing research threads to help improve distributed work. The paper focuses on justifying and developing collaboration processes which will guide designers through the virtual space and improve their current low levels of awareness. The role of the computer as a tool, space and medium is discussed together with a summary of past approaches within the distributed design domain.
