Abstract: Greece is an EU country which suffers from a low level of organisation in breach of the Waste Framework Directives. Although Greece has been condemned several times by the European Court of Justice, Greek cities still dump their waste in landfills causing environmental and social problems. The determination of the optimal solution requires the consideration of technical, economic, environmental legislation and social aspects. This study is aimed at the evaluation of two alternative solid waste local strategies in the Municipality of Chania, a coastal city in Greece, giving a different management perspective. In the first scenario, the contribution of a home composting program to the waste management of Municipality is examined. In the second alternative scenario, the construction of a combustion unit is analysed. These scenarios are investigated for their environmental impact assessment in order to achieve the goals of the EU in combination to the local needs and conditions.
