Abstract: This article presents an improvement of power quality of wind energy grid-connected systems (WEGCS) using shunt connected static synchronous compensator (STATCOM); since the injection of wind farm produces power quality problems. STATCOM as a type of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) at the point of common coupling (PCC) between the grid and the wind system is implied to regulate the system of terminal voltage during side disturbances like voltage swelling and voltage sagging. The PI controller is used to regulate the injected reactive power based on the voltage control loop of the STATCOM at PCC. The PI controller of STATCOM used in this article is tuned by genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimisation (PSO). Simulation results illustrates the capability of STATCOM to adjust the voltage at PCC during different disturbances, moreover the superiority of PSO over GA in terms of control measures. The proposed validity system is achieved using MATLAB/SIMULINK package.
