Abstract: The paper identifies and discusses a number of criteria by which the two approaches to business science can be distinguished. In the current debate, the terms |management| and |business administration| are used as if the differences were only of semantic importance. This considerably hinders scientific progress as there is no chance to dialectically compare two research programmes which are different on all levels of analysis. The paper ends with a suggested division of labour between the two.

Keywords: management; business administration; closed systems theory; dogmatism; positivism; constructionism; operationalisation; business science.
