Abstract: Numerous studies have focused on the aggregate impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on employee behaviour. However, there are few studies which have investigated the differential effects of CSR components on employee behaviour. The objective of this study is to investigate the differential effects of CSR on compassion at the workplace based on social exchange mechanisms. The proposed model was tested on 478 employees who are working in the financial industry of the north-eastern states of India. The study revealed that CSR to social and non-social stakeholders, customers, government, and employees act as significant predictors of compassion in the workplace.

Keywords: workplace compassion; social exchange theory; corporate social responsibility; CSR; employee behaviour; India; financial services.
