Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between managerial competencies and capacity for sustainable innovation at Electrolux of Brazil from 2000 to 2011. The aim of this study is to contribute to the discussion on transition to a new paradigm of sustainable innovations and to answer two questions: is there a relationship between managerial competencies and the degree of innovation? How was innovation adapted to the technological transition in accordance with sustainability requirements? A case study was used, along with qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The empirical findings suggest that innovation is the result of interaction between managerial competencies and routines and processes. The company adapted its projects to the environmental requirements as practices of common sense in the evolutionary context of the sustainability paradigm.

Keywords: managerial competencies; sustainable innovation; organisational routines; capability; paradigm; Electrolux of Brazil; environmental sustainability; technological transition; case study.
