Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of the static voltage stability in power systems. Basic concepts relating to the instability and voltage collapse are presented. The problem of voltage collapse is processed through the bifurcation curves voltage drawn by the continuation power flow (CPF). The optimal use of the SVC and the STATCOM in the improvement of the static voltage stability margin also retains our interest in this paper. The problem of voltage collapse has been formulated as an optimisation problem, then, a solution using particle swarm optimisation is proposed, applied on the analysis of the voltage stability of a power system. In this work, we proposed two indices to optimise the size and the location of the SVC and the STATCOM. The influence of these two FACTS on voltage stability margin of the network has been studied. Thereafter, we performed a brief comparison between SVC and STATCOM in improving the voltage stability margin of the network.
