Abstract: This paper presents a new three-phase nine-switch AC-AC converter topology. The proposed converter grants sinusoidal inputs and sinusoidal outputs, unity input power factor, and low manufacturing cost, as a consequence of its reduced number of active switches (IGBTs) from 12 to 9 switches. The operating principle of the proposed converter was explained in detail. Its modulation scheme by using space vector modulation (SVM) technique is discussed. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the rectifier side and inverter side are compared. Semiconductor loss analysis and comparison with the back-to-back two-level voltage source converter are presented. The proposed converter results signified the positive merits of this converter.
