Abstract: The implications of both environmental and transport trends for an oil company are examined in an international context. The paper considers what these implications mean for oil consumers, and concentrates on issues that will cause change. Lessons are drawn from the introduction of unleaded petrol in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The long and short-term outlooks for transport fuels in the energy equation are examined, as well as the repercussions these have for car and engine design.

Keywords: energy; environmental impact; future trends; legislation; oil; transport fuels; unleaded petrol; vehicle design; engine design.
