Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) street lighting schemes initiated by the Government of India are described in the context of rural electrification (RE) programmes. Street lighting has been part of RE programmes and its energy needs can be met by PV systems, which are the major option. The economics of PV street lighting are examined, and the more general social aspects of PV implementation are discussed.
