Abstract: This paper presents some examples of how to reconcile conflicting economic, social and environmental demands using the development and implementation of advanced technology systems. The examples are drawn from Brazil, a developing country with a broad industrial base. The paper describes Brazil|s experience in exploiting oil shale as an industrial fuel, in the use of fluidised-bed combustion, and the incineration of industrial wastes.
