Abstract: Many of the photovoltaic (PV) systems installed by governments involve a significant element of financial subsidies. In some remote islands of Fiji, however, the solar PV systems have been purchased/rented by consumers themselves for lighting their homes and/or shops. This article describes the experience in the use of these lighting kits in the islands of Qamia and Taveuni. It also presents the economic aspects of using PV from the viewpoints of the consumer as well as society. The article is divided into three parts: Section 1 reviews the field experience, including the financial aspects, while Section 2 presents an economic analysis from the societal point of view. Finally, Section 3 draws some conclusions about the consumer response as well as more general policy implications.

Keywords: economics; Fiji; photovoltaics; PV lighting; social impact; finance; economics; energy policy.
