Abstract: Costa Rica, in common with many countries in Latin America, has traditionally approached the question of development with inadequate consideration of the environmental impact of economic growth and its long-term effect on resources. Costa Rica has recently addressed these problems by formulating a National Conservation Strategy for Sustainable Development (ECODES); the first of its kind in Latin America. The strategy has been designed to take account of a wide range of influences, such as industry, science and technology, environmental deterioration, health, legislation, education, communication and culture and to apply over an extended period of time.
