Abstract: Agenda 21 and other proposals intended to promote sustainable development include specific energy proposals and other long-term suggestions which will affect energy use patterns. This paper reviews specific energy policies which can affect energy use in major consuming sectors. Policies aimed at promoting energy efficiency are important components of sustainable development programs since the resulting reduction in energy use means less harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Energy supply issues are also addressed in terms of their impact on achieving sustainable development. The ultimate goal of achieving a complete transition to environmentally sound energy sources is examined with regard to the energy policies required as well as other social and economic policies which will affect energy use in the long term.
Keywords: energy consumption; energy policy; energy resources; sustainable development; sustainability.
