Abstract: This article provides an overview of current and planned electricity projects in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to demonstrate the extent of investment. It also focuses on Southern Africa. For electricity the political changes in Southern Africa have facilitated better utilisation of existing investments, such as the Cahora Bassa Hydro-Electric Station. This paper looks at the Southern African Power Pool initiative (SAPP) as a concerted regional co-operation venture between twelve utilities.

Keywords: electricity investment; Southern Africa Power Pool; SAPP; Sub-Saharan Africa; energy projects; regional cooperation.
