Abstract: Increased use of natural gas for power generation is expected to contribute to an overall increase in natural gas consumption in Western Europe over the next few years. This paper sets out to analyse this trend, with specific attention paid to gas-fired cogeneration. The influence of energy prices is considered, as are the present market barriers to the further development of gas-fired cogeneration in Europe.

Keywords: energy economics; energy prices; European Union; EU energy policy; gas-fired cogeneration; natural gas consumption; combined heat and power; CHP; market barriers.
