Abstract: The chosen strategy of advanced nuclear reactor development constitutes the optimum medium-term solution to meet the demand for electricity as from the year 2000, since in both cases, evolutionary and passive reactors, the objectives sought are safety and cost reduction. The solutions which are presented in this paper will remain valid until such time as far more advanced technologies, based upon the operational experience of those currently under development, and capable of competing in terms of safety and economy, become available. In any case, nuclear energy will necessarily continue to play an important role in electricity supply.

Keywords: competitivity; cost reduction; new technology; nuclear power plants; NPP; nuclear energy; nuclear safety; advanced nuclear reactors.
