Abstract: Environmental impacts of petroleum production, though common knowledge, have not been reported and, as evidenced by available publications, not thoroughly studied either. This paper attempts to give a general account of various possible environmental impacts of the different stages of petroleum production and suggests not only that further studies be carried out to better understand the nature of such impacts but also that serious regulations would be required to ensure better protection of the environment.

Keywords: oil production; petroleum production; environmental impact; sub-sea gathering; decommissioning; environmental protection.
