Abstract: Analysis of the transport sector in Italy gives evidence of infrastructure scarcity, management and organisational problems and, more generally, of poor quality and competitiveness of the services. At the end of 2005 the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Trasport established the UIRNet Company to create a computer platform for integrated logistics at the national level. Such platform was created to make more efficient, secure and safe the national logistics system by means of localisation and communication services. This paper describes the flexible and modular architecture of such platform and the services it provides. The UIRNet computer platform is based on the use of web-oriented data exchange solutions and allows the full integration with other external systems, such as, e.g., legacy platforms for fleet management, intelligent transport systems. Furthermore, the platform is accessible to the institutions and flexible in order to interface with other platforms. Its functionalities are fully accessible by mobile or fixed terminals, and via web through the internet.
