Abstract: During the past decade, several Web companies have developed what I would call 'Web data stores' to support the performance, scalability and availability requirements of their interactive Web services. Google's Bigtable and Amazon's Dynamo in particular have energised a community of developers to develop similar systems as open source. These systems have come to be known as 'NoSQL database' systems. In this paper, I will examine these systems from the data model and data management perspective which has not been given enough attention. This is to shed further light on understanding the nature of these systems and their future directions.

Keywords: NoSQL databases; web services; scalable architecture; web data stores; data modelling; data management.
