Abstract: International regimes can be regarded as a tool to understand the plurality of legal orders, or multiple centres of power, operative within the same social space. The UN system can be seen as leading an emergent international environmental regime. Bound within the principle of national sovereignty, this regime has not contributed very effectively to difficult global environmental problems. However, the structure and dynamics of the regime impacts significantly on environmental politics. Hence, the paper will map the evolution of the environmental regime and its impact on environmental politics, with particular focus on its North-South dynamics.

Keywords: international regimes; environmental regimes; national sovereignty; global environmental problems; environmental politics; North-South dynamics.
