Title: Women as agents of environmental change

Abstract: Complex relationships between women, environment, gender and development have an impact on the management of natural resources. Women are both the primary consumers and producers of food and woodfuel to meet the daily needs of their families and communities yet their participation in environmental and developmental projects is constrained in many ways. Historical policies and cultural stereotypes serve to disempower women and devalue women|s knowledge. Analyses of development projects aimed at slowing environmental degradation and restoring natural resources underscore the need for including women at every phase.
