Abstract: This paper argues that there is a significant gap between the rhetoric of neo-liberalism in the workplace and its reality. Drawing especially on experiences in the UK and France it suggests that while neo-liberalism can be seen as a new form of neo-Taylorist managerialism, concerned to both 'depublicise' the public sector and degrade work, it has only achieved what De Gaulejac has called a 'façade of adhesion'.

Keywords: neo-liberalism; workplace; inequality; managerialism; labour process; UK; United Kingdom; France; neo-Taylorism.
