Abstract: This paper explores an aspect of the urban regeneration programmes in the UK that emerged with the development of the Pathfinder initiative under the Labour Government of 1997-2010. It looks at the housing and social problems created by the regeneration programme in Salford and explores how research into the negative consequences of the regeneration programme in the area was developed into a story and then a film by a journalist so providing an input into the wider debate about the nature of the initiative. It argues that the basic economic and business model of Pathfinder regeneration was wrong and that the programme compounded social problems in the area under investigation.
