Abstract: In the current global crisis, the Brazilian |pre-salt oil-fields| agenda, under the control of the state, could be considered a solution which supports the development pattern. Our purpose is to highlight the investment trends in the natural resources sector and the challenges to sustainability in contemporary Brazil. The article suggests that the relation between investment patterns and the development process in Brazil has exposed deep tensions related to the social dimensions of its ecological problems.
