Abstract: The RFID based vehicle toll collection system (VTS) is designed to assist in the management of toll operations through technology that aids in streamlining traffic movement. This work is an attempt to design and implement a VTS which enables the toll authority to ease and automate their duty. The VTS present in this paper performs automatic identification of vehicles and collection of toll from vehicles travelling along the toll lane by machine-readable information. This information instigates by a mobile vehicle identification-sending unit adapted and mounted at least on one of the vehicles. As the vehicle approaches the identification site, the computerised control unit placed near toll lane receives the identifier signal and calculates the toll to be debited and electronically debits the toll on the account of the particular vehicle. This system allows a vehicle to persist past the scan point without stopping, thus offering maximum convenience to motorists, speeding up the flow of traffic, and reducing the number of human resources required at highway toll plazas.
