Abstract: The paper compares approaches to the continuing education of professionals, advocating a contextual learning approach. Through contextual learning a student progresses from conventional passive learning, through more active forms, to forms which simulate real-world professional activity. The development of theory and practice of contextual learning in the USSR is presented.
