Abstract: Joint ventures in China in the auto industry have successfully introduced advanced technology in manufacturing using imported machinery. Various essential aspects of the process of new technology introduction and application in Chinese joint ventures are discussed here, including the decision making process in Chinese joint ventures for technology introduction, planning, technical training, and the normal business procedures and practices associated with machine and equipment import. A detailed case study illustrates the principles discussed in the opening sections of the paper. Some lessons for Chinese as well as foreign firms are identified.
