Abstract: This paper offers a conceptual framework for exploring the potential role of Expert Systems (ES) in supporting the strategic planning process in the operations management function of organisations. First, the strategic planning process will be considered in a general sense as well as in the operations management function around four specific operations functions, i.e., forecasting, capacity planning, logistics management, and facility location. Then, we provide a broad background of the ES technology with a general exploration followed by a pointed discussion on the potential uses in operations management as well as the limitations. Next, we propose the main thesis of this paper in the form of a conceptual model. Each of the components and the relationships among them will be discussed thoroughly. The paper provides theoretical and managerial ideas and insights in order to sustain the role of expert systems in supporting the strategic planning process in the operations management function, and finally we provide suggestions for further research.
