Abstract: This paper presents the current state of French and European practices for road tunnel safety. It rapidly surveys the main aspects of legislation, and then presents the evolution of risk governance in tunnels from being initially focused on technical devices to gradually integrating human and organisational aspects in the approach of safety. A brief presentation of recent projects dealing with safety in tunnels is also presented, with a focus on the study of psychological aspects of users| behaviour. Experimental results are discussed.

Keywords: road tunnels; tunnel safety; human factors; decision support; legislation; risk governance; emergency management; user behaviour; psychology.
