Abstract: This paper presents a case study aiming to identify the critical areas which influence the system response performance before it is widely deployed to nationwide for the National Immunisation Information System which is a web-based distributed system newly developed by Taiwan|s Center for Disease Control. The performance measurement is conducted through field experiments and simulation to measure the system response time from remote client workstations accessing to system|s centralised application and database servers. The results of the analysis show that the system response time is significantly determined by the number of concurrent users, the placement of system servers, the network bandwidth and the traffic load of the network. The findings from this study may offer the precautions for the ill-performance areas of NIIS which have to be overcome before it is formally deployed to the client sites nationwide for daily operation.
