Abstract: Almost all of the published work in the academic and popular press on Web-Based Technologies (WBT) – most notably the internet – emphasises the merits. While WBT have had an extraordinary, and arguably positive net influence on business organisations, they have also created a number of significant challenges for managers. This paper proposes a framework for evaluating the positive and negative influences of WBT, outlining economic, organisational and customer factors that have influenced organisations in far-reaching ways. If organisations are to harness the full benefits of technology, they must become fully aware and minimise the negative |side effects| of these advances.

Keywords: internet; technology evaluation; web-based technologies; WBT; productivity; success factors; business performance; new economy; disaggregation; reaggregation; negative effects.
