Abstract: In this paper, we suggest to maximise the average number of detected tags (ANDTs) of radio frequency identification (RFID) by optimising packet energies of hybrid automatic repeat request protocol. Our results are valid for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels as well as Rayleigh fading channels. We optimise the ANDT when automatic repeat request (ARQ) or HARQI are used to transmit the electronic product code (EPC). The results are extended to ARQ and HARQI with chase combining (CC) where received packet are maximum ratio combined (MRC) to maximise the ANDT. Our results are valid for Rayleigh and additive white gaussian noise channels. Optimised HARQ allows 0.4-2.3 dB gain with respect to conventional HARQ.
