Abstract: The rising demand on clean water is putting pressure to increase their water production and find renewable resources. Therefore, several countries are gravitating toward the desalination of saltwater as a solution, including UAE. In fact, UAE is among the leading countries in water desalination with an approximate production of 1.7 billion cubic metres. The saltwater desalination is a complex process that requires the consideration of several criteria; it is an intriguing process that can be applied using different methods, hence the purpose of this paper. We present an analysis study regarding the improvement of the desalination by removing the carcinogenic agents and controlling the use of energy. The aim is to present an overview of the techniques used in the UAE for saltwater desalination. The objective is to understand the mechanism of bromide-free sodium hydrochloride plants and to evaluate the different desalination techniques and their impact on the water industry.

Keywords: water desalination; bromide; energy; water scarcity; UAE.
