Title: Genetic algorithms applied to the efficiency of storage logistics

Abstract: It is required to minimise the operation time of a bridge crane in a storage warehouse. The problem is assimilated to a two-dimensional packaging model where the objective function is to minimise the total travel time of the crane bridge subject to restrictions of available space. A genetic algorithm is proposed as a solution, with a chromosome that represents the sequence, initial population conformed with heuristic and random sequences, selection of parents by proportional roulette, crossing by SJ2OX, mutation by ARB2, population update by tournament and stopping criteria by number of iterations without improving the value of the objective function. The results show a reduction in the entry and exit operations, reducing total operating times and improving the safety of support personnel. In future work, other intelligent techniques could be applied, and the model formulated as a three-dimensional packaging problem.
