Abstract: Organisations use complex information systems called 'business intelligence (BI)' systems with the objective of strengthening their decision-making process, but there is a dearth of research available on how to improve the quality of the BI decision-making process. This research seeks to fill the gap that exists by investigating the critical factors. The study followed a two-staged approach: firstly, to study the concept of BI. Next, to develop an understanding of factors that affect or influence the BI output and evaluate the effects of business environmental factors on the outcome of the BI system along with their relative importance to obtaining effective decision making. The empirical findings of the research substantiate the overall constructs and factors relationship. More significantly, this study contributes to both the field of academia for research purposes and to the industry for application purposes.
