Abstract: The application of project management tools and techniques in the management of research and development projects has increased in recent years so as to achieve its strategic objective and manage the organisation's operations. This paper aims to present an overview of strategic project management application in research and development (R&D) projects and to identify success factors when dealing with research and development (R&D) projects. A quantitative research method was adopted and the data collected were analysed using SPSS. The study identified that the appointment of project team, experiences and competencies of project team and their ability to work as a team; management support in project funding; project planning; project management methodology and understanding of the principles of project management were found to be determinants that were associated with strategic project management and could affect the execution of R&D projects in public research organisations.
