Abstract: This paper presents a comparative analysis on the appropriateness of fuzzy weighted average (FWA) based on left and right scores, classical fuzzy TOPSIS and fuzzy TOPSIS based on left and right scores (FTOPSIS-LR) for deciding on optimal conceptual design. A set of alternative design concept of pipe bending machine were considered as case study. The three methods indicate the same design concept as the optimal design. However, results show that there are discrepancies in the final values. This discrepancy can be accrued to the fact that normalisation of weights allotted to the design features plays a significant role in obtaining a consistent variation in the final values of the design concepts. The effect of normalised weights occurred in the FWA method than the FTOPSIS-LR because there is a consistent variation in the final values using the FWA method compared to the large variation in the final values of the FTOPSIS-LR.
