Abstract: Taking India as a strong case, this paper goes some way towards critically examining certain myths by pointing out certain stark realities. It points out, on one hand, tender mindedness on the part of the State and, on the other hand, false consciousness on the part of management. Using the polemical style predicated in theory, the paper posits the status of human resource management within the changing scenario, and thence proceeds to highlight certain aspects of business and society, trying to identify the character of each and the implications thereof.

Keywords: trust; transparency; transition; corporate culture; value addition; human resources.
