Abstract: While the possible responses to global environmental concerns (such as the |greenhouse effect|) will be limited in the next 10-20 years, these concerns should serve as sufficient incentives to develop Asian natural gas resources as fast as possible. Such a strategy would not only lead to a cleaner environment but, at the same time, through the |efficiency dividend| of natural gas systems would lead to continued economic growth in the region in a manner similar to the way efficiency gains from new technologies and processes have led to an upsurge in economic activity in the Asian New Industrialized Economies (NIEs).
Keywords: environment; global warming; greenhouse effect; natural gas resources; South-East Asia; Third World development; new industrialised economies; NIEs; economic growth.
