Abstract: Political and economic changes in Central and Eastern Europe offer the possibility for improvement in the areas of energy conservation and environmental protection. The impact of environmental legislation in Slovakia is considered, and a number of scenarios for emissions reduction are discussed. The acceptance of new emissions limits throughout the region could act as to encourage a shift towards greater use of natural gas.
