Title: Environmental challenge: gaining the acceptance of society

Authors: Bjorn Stigson

Abstract: This article discusses the change of attitude necessary in industrial organisations towards the environment from the former position which was the exploitation of the environment as a |free| resource to the requirement of the present and future of an acceptance of responsibility for the environmental impacts of industrial activities. This leads directly to the use of environmental audits. The input of environmental considerations into the design of products is discussed, as is the need for openness regarding industrial activities and the pollution control measures being taken. Apart from much greater information exchange between companies and countries much more dialogue is called for with employees and the public, especially with local communities.

Keywords: environmental audit; information exchange; public dialogue; environmental management; environmental impact; product design; environmental pollution; pollution control.
